As far as I can tell there aren’t many good uses for pumpkins, except for Jack-o-lanterns. Sure you can make pumpkin bread and well…..who am I kidding, nothing else. Our three little ones love to go to our local pumpkin patch and pick out there own pumpkins. We then take them home and argue about why they can’t use knives yet and why they need to let me help them carve their pumpkins. Kids are so independent at a young age, unfortunately they grow out of it and need everything. O.K. back on topic. Ever since I was a child I have loved to carve a jack-o-lanterns at Halloween. My kids also love it and I try to give them as much freedom as possible when they draw out a face to be cut. Here are there “creations” for the year. Not too bad. I’ve also included some pictures of my favorites over the past couple years. Have fun this Halloween, don’t eat any bad candy, carve a pumpkin. The uglier the better.

It’s the first day of school. New clothes are on, lunches are packed and butterflies are in tummies. We have a fifth grader and a kindergartener this year. It is not uncommon to see tears on the first day of school, not from kids but moms. My wife never had that problem. We had those first day butterflies with them, but that soon passed. I must admit that we do get a good laugh at all those SOBBING moms and their boxes of tissues.

My wife, Ginny, came from a large family. There were 7 siblings in all, 5 girls and 2 boys. Now there are 14 grandchildren, 1 great grandchild, and some spouses, 33 in all. I had one brother, big difference. So needless to say there are several birthdays each month. We are on our way to a pool party for a couple of nephews now. I always feel lost at these nutty things, I usually find a nice spot to hide in and wait it out. My kids love playing with all their cousins, so that makes it kind of fun for me. Ginny and I chose long ago not to keep up with her parents birth rate. We figured out early on where babies come from.

Part of my job as a father is to torture my kids. Wait, before you click away from this page, let me clarify. I know that school starts in less than 1 week and all the lazy summer days are drawing to an end. I just want to make sure my kids know it. So I frequently remind them by counting down the days and hours till their little bottoms are securely set in those tiny desk. No more sleeping late, leisure evenings watching T.V. or playing outside till dusk. Time for LEARNING!!! I do not do this to make my children dread school, but to encourage them to cherish every moment in life and the freedom we have. And it brings my joy to hear my 10 year old say, “I know school is starting next week, stop reminding me”. AHHHH, ain’t being a parent fun!
